Join the call to increase awareness and support for achieving carbon neutrality goals. With strong support from President and Chair Mr. Ban Ki-moon, the Campaign has offered to work with the Government of Korea to meet its net-zero emissions pledge.
Blue skies in the longer-term is inextricably linked to ambitious and bold climate action – net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050, as a requirement to stay within an 1.5-degree Celsius increase in world temperatures. Maintaining average world temperatures is necessary to limit the likelihood of extreme climate patterns that will impact Korea’s society and economy.
The 74th Session of the United Nations adopted Korea-led resolution of designating the “International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies” as September 7 by consensus of all the UN member states. The adoption of the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies is the result of the need for joint efforts to raise awareness of air pollution and enhance air quality.
Active cooperation and collaboration among local governments, governments, international organizations and civil society groups are key to reducing air pollution to improve air quality in the country. The Campaign for Blue Skies and Net Zero 2050 in the Republic of Korea will serve as a platform to demonstrate support for the Korean Government to announce a net zero emissions target by 2050.
In an effort to increase both the public awareness of climate change and support for more ambitious climate action in the country, we, the Campaign Secretariat GGGI and Climate Change Center (CCC), have been co-organizing a series of Climate Talk & Net Zero 2050 events (both virtually and in-person) with our Campaign partners, including the Netherlands Embassy in Seoul, the New Zealand Embassy in Seoul and the European Chamber of Commerce in Korea.
The Korean Green Deal, announced by President Moon Jae-in earlier, is also a unique opportunity to green the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and accelerate climate action, demonstrating the path to achieving the net zero pledge. The challenge for the Korean government now is to develop and implement solid policies and measures to demonstrate that the Net Zero 2050 target can indeed be achieved. That is what we propose to focus the Campaign on in the coming months leading up to the P4G Summit on May 30-31, 2021.
With strong support from GGGI’s President and Chair Mr. Ban Ki-moon, the 8th Secretary General of the United Nations, we have offered to support the Government of Korea to meet its net zero emissions pledge. We are also delighted with the support and interest from our more than 40 partner organizations and the government. Together with our Campaign partners, we are ready to prepare a successful civil society and business event prior to the P4G Seoul Summit in May.
